Memorial Day

We went to visit all my Grandparents' graves. When we told Kaleb it was time to go, he said, "where are we going?"

Charles answered "To go see Great-Grandma and Great-Grandpa."

Kaleb just stopped dead in his tracks and with wide eyes he said, "Are we going to heaven?"

My mom told me something that our friends the Collins' used to do, and I thought was such a sweet idea. She said that every Memorial Day, Barbara (the kids' Grandma) would take the kids to her husband's grave and they would wash the headstone and trim the grass surrounding it.

  1. It originally started to put a flag on Grandpa's headstone because of his service in the military but that was never enough so we also cleaned them up and polished them so they would look nice. Even Sheila's grave.
It's a great tradition that the boys will always remember and you will too.

  3. Emm, thanks for sharing that. I think that's such a good idea.

Not to mention it is the perfect time to introduce a cemetery to kids--when it's gorgeous, full of flowers and people, and not all creepy-looking. I have been terrified of graveyards for a looooong time. Maybe this was how YOU survived having one right behind your backyard all those years!

But when we went the other day, there was a really really peaceful and happy feeling... if you could tune out my rowdy boys. :)

  4. Em, I've known you my whole life and I never knew that.

And I realize it's not very respectful but I cannot stop laughing about Kaleb asking about heaven. I'm sorry but that is hilaaarious.

Jaden was really sweet at Grandma MacKay's grave. He was very respectful and pensive. I could tell he was trying to do the right thing and think about her and be a little sad. Such a good kid.

P.S. You forgot to mention the bagpipes someone was playing somewhere at one of the cemeteries. It's always a good time when someone brings bagpipes.

  5. That is a good tradition to start. Alli, I understand what you are saying about Kaleb's "Are we going to heaven" comment, it's cute, but I laughed too.

  6. Kaleb is flippin adorable!!! Hahaha, I about peed my pants!

I didn't know that Grandma and Grandpa Mackay's anniversary was on May 20th, I guess Grandma decided she wanted to make sure they didn't miss spending their anniversary together. I am glad you posted these picture, I wish I could have been there!

  7. Crissy, I never thought about it but that's probably why I never was afraid of the cemetery. But what about you? You just lived down the street. You weren't that much further away.

Alli, bagpipes do make pretty much any occasion or outing or whatever a better time. :) :)
